Isabelle was having trouble focusing.

She didn't even have anything in particular that needed her undivided attention, so it shouldn't have been a problem. But it was annoying. She didn't like moods like this. What was the point of not being able to get lost in doing anything? Ugh. And she'd already been down at the gym training, too. And both her closets were as organized as they were going to get. And she didn't feel like shopping.

So, this was how you ended up pacing around the room like a caged animal. It was not a good look on her.

Maybe she needed to go for a run or something.

"I think long nails are better if you make them glittery," Anders decided, tilting his head to the side. "They look less hermit-y that way."

"And Magnus is not a hermit." He threw much better parties than that, for one. She looked quizzical, though. "I still don't know what the difference between a warlock and a mage is."

[not_every_mage]

"Magnus is an excellent warlock name," Anders said approvingly. "I should tell him that too."

Because clearly Magnus was begging for strange people to like his name.

"Oh, and I don't know the difference either. At home we normally say mage. An enchanter's a mage who gets to boss apprentices around, and a magister's a mage who runs things in Tevinter. But warlock, witch, wizard -- I know they mean similar things but they're not words we ever use, except in bad novels."

"But, mage and the others, do they just mean magic user, or...?"

Because 'warlock' came with some extra qualifications.

[not_every_mage]

"More or less," Anders nodded. "Or someone with a natural ability to use magic, anyhow. Why, what's a warlock?"

"Well," Isabelle said, "for one thing, they're half human and half demon."

That seemed like a pretty crucial thing.

"We'd call that an abomination," Anders said, sounding serious. "And mainly they want to kill everything."

Isabelle was exactly as neutral as before, talking in a light tone. Didn't bother her much. "Some Downworlders call them half-breeds, too," she said, with a little shrug. "I think most people save 'abomination' for actual demons, though."

[not_every_mage]

"Wait, 'half' as in they have one parent who's human and one who's a demon?" Anders tried to clarify. "I don't think we could even do that. Abominations are mages who get possessed."

[seveninchmotto]

"I don't think the demon does enough to qualify as a parent in anything but the strictest biological sense, but yes," Isabelle confirmed. "It tends to involve deception."

[not_every_mage]

"I can't imagine why," Anders said dryly. "I'm sure people are just lining up to sleep with your average demon."

[seveninchmotto]

"In most cases, it's not even physically possible." Yes, it was gross. "That's why it's usually Eidolons. They're the best at shapeshifting."

[not_every_mage]

"If it's physically possible for us at all, I've never heard of it," Anders said. "Not that people would necessarily announce it if it did."

And now he was going to wonder if there were half-demons in his world.It was something to research.

"What's an Eidolon? Our demons are all named for sins, like Wrath or Pride."

"They're just shapeshifting demons in general," she said. "There are different types, but we tend to focus on the fact that they can camouflage themselves and are therefore annoying."

More dangerous than most, too, but also annoying. She preferred to focus on that.

"You'd think you'd run out of sins faster than you'd run out of demons."

"You'd think, but there are only so many types that bother humans," Anders said. "Wrath or pride or whatever is a name for a type of demon, not an individual. But somehow when a big pile of flame starts trying to kill me I tend to forget to ask what it wants to be called."

"I'm not even sure where half our names for demons come from," Isabelle replied. "We tend to remember them, though, even though they're not as catchy as wrath."

"Old language, maybe?" Anders suggested. "That's usually where our weird words come from."
